The Million Dollar Quartet - 50th Anniversary Edition
The Million Dollar Quartet - 50th Anniversary Edition
2006 marks the 50th Anniversary of several historic moments in the early career of Elvis Presley. One of them is the informal 'Million Dollar Quartet' jam session with Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash * at Sun Studios on December 4th 1956. To mark the 50th Anniversary, Charley Records will be releasing a special edition 2CD set.

* It has long been believed that Johnny Cash was only featured in the photo of the performers and did not participate in the 'jam' however Johnny Cash states in his autobiography that he was present during recording and he is a part of the recorded performance. Johnny had to sing in a different key to keep up with Elvis and because of this his voice is not recognised.

But regardless Elvis, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis were there -- and this was the first time Elvis met Jerry Lee, who was at the time just the pianist on Carl's session. At this point in time, Elvis was already recording for RCA -- so it was quite a treat to have him drop by the Sun Studios.

One of the highlights of the tape is Elvis telling the others about seeing one of Wards Dominoes (in fact it was Jackie Wilson) imitating him in Las Vegas. Elvis then imitates Jackie Wilson imitating him! Elvis also sings a version of Paralized (a song he had already recorded) in the style of Wilson -- and it is much better than the real recording!  How great to hear young Elvis with his contemporaries, just singing for the sake of jamming. You can't ask for more!

Disc one features 41 tracks from the actual session, while disc two contains 32 classic Sun recordings from Elvis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis.

The 'parade' footage is good to see as it puts you in the right context with color and b&w footage. The interviews of Elvis' Parents are well worth hearing too. The afternoon show footage is wonderful and electrifying : Here is Elvis in his prime rocking and rolling in front of 11.000 people. Highly recommended.
