Gary Pepper, president of the Elvis Tankers Fan Club, look every morning through the local papers and cut out articles that mentioned local business. These companies would pay Gary for the articles he'd find. Gary started noticing articles about a new singer with the unusual name, Presley.

After Gary read that Mrs. Presley had started a scrapbook for Elvis, he started providing her with clippings. Gary had cerebral palsy, but he was self-supporting in running his own business.

His kindnesses led to a solid friendship between Gary and Mrs. Presley. The whole family became close with Gary, and Elvis bought for Gary, his mother and his nurse, this house on Dolan drive. Elvis hired Gary's father, Sterling Pepper, to work as a gate guard at Graceland.

Gary's mother would take him everywhere we went in Memphis. The movies and the gates of Graceland. However, he was not part of the group close to Elvis.

Amongst the crowd was Gary Pepper, head of the Elvis Tankers fan club.

Gary's 'review' of Elvis Presley in Concert  February 25, 1961

Gary Pepper noted that Elvis forgot some of the lyrics to 'Don't Be Cruel', but ad-libbed to great effect. The sublime 'Fever' and jubilee gospel number 'Swing Down, Sweet Chariot' were apparently only done that evening, while first show exclusives were 'Doin' The Best I Can' and 'Surrender'. 'Both reviews in The Tankcaster emphasized how the shows were marked by screaming fans, a hysteria Elvis often evoked -- and sometime consciously provoked -- on his 1956-57 tours.
