On what would have been Elvis Presley's 77th birthday, hundreds of fans from around the world yesterday gathered at the Memphis mansion Graceland, where the 'King of Rock 'n' Roll' lived and died.

The birthday celebration kicked off what is expected to be a year of global Elvis mania, marking the 35th anniversary of his death, aged 42, on August 16, 1977. Memphis officials expect record numbers of visitors all year, leading to an anniversary commemoration at Graceland, where Presley and his mother are buried.

'Every five years, we see history repeat itself and we expect that to happen again this year as fans remember Elvis Presley', said Kevin Kane, president and CEO of the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau, who added that the city is preparing for a wave of visitors to exceed the typical 600,000 to 700,000 fans who visit Graceland each year. Elvis Presley's birthday is a milestone this year, which marks both the 35th anniversary year of his death and the 30th year since Graceland set out on the 'grand adventure' that turned it into one of the best-known tourist attractions on the planet. Forbes magazine estimated Presley's earnings at $US55 million in 2011, exceeding contemporary superstars such as Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber.

Elvis has sold more than a billion albums since then and continues to outearn many other living celebrities.

The 'parade' footage is good to see as it puts you in the right context with color and b&w footage. The interviews of Elvis' Parents are well worth hearing too. The afternoon show footage is wonderful and electrifying : Here is Elvis in his prime rocking and rolling in front of 11.000 people. Highly recommended.
