I have just been listening to two CDR copies (Disc 1 and 2), made directly from the Sony master for Elvis Presley: 50 Australian Top Ten Hits 1956-1977, and they sound fantastic.

Not just the songs themselves, not just the quality, but to hear each track in the order that they charted, and then getting into the 60s all of a sudden a 50s recording comes on and it's just magic!!!

So although, due to the nature of the format, hits in order of chart pacing, it is amazing how every song fits as if there was complete control over the track order. Ballads where you want then, rockers where they should be. As fans we all know the pleasure of listening to Elvis, but with this release there is that extra special something, with each track you are listening to history, and every track is like a revelation, listening to one song flow after the other - and even the one song on this set that some may have a preconceived negative opinion of, is a joy to the ears. Largely, I think, due to the song that proceeds it and then the one that follows. As if RCA had it all planned. Following is the text entry in the liner notes, for the '50s track referred to above ...

Tk30: Ain't That Lovin' You Baby (November 1964)
"Ain’t That Lovin' You Baby" was released as a double A-side single with the ballad "Ask Me" and was Elvis' tenth No.1 hit in Australia, for three weeks from mid-November 1964. This song was originally recorded in June 1958, and while RCA pushed radio stations to play "Ask Me" most ignored this and played the up-tempo 1958 recording and it was the older song that fans purchased the single for.

Sony Music Entertainment will celebrate the 75th anniversary of The King's birthday in style with the release of Elvis Presley: 50 Australian Top Ten Hits 1956-1977 in Australia on January 8, 2010.

This double CD set is the first ever Elvis Presley Australian hits compilation. Although Elvis never travelled to Australia, it was, and remains, one of his most successful territories outside of the United States. From 1956 to 2006, he spent 1,780 weeks in total with 120 entries on the Australian Singles Chart. He accumulated a total of 61 weeks at No.1 with his 14 #1 hits and had 48 Top 10 singles, with some of these being 'double A sides', thus taking his tally to over 50. Fifty of these Top 10 Hits are featured on this compilation. Expect not only the well known hit songs, but also many that are unique to Australia.

Elvis Presley's success is not only measured in sales numbers and #1 hits but a unique combination of the right time, the right moves and the right look. His impact on popular music and popular culture continues to be felt across all generations around the world. As we approach Elvis' 75th birthday on January 8, 2010, we toast his successes and reflect on his enormous impact on what we now call popular music.
