The Mercury newspapers Sunday Edition - The Sunday Tasmanian, has run a CD review of the Elvis Presley: 50 Australian Top Ten Hits 1956-1977 on Sunday February 7, 2010. The review by Jarrad Bevan, titled, 'When Elvis Ruled Our Charts' takes up half a page and is in the eGuide Music section on page 22. The CD is rated 4 stars out of 5. 'Listening to these CDs, it's obvious why he was such a huge success and is still adored. Elvis's sound was a blueprint for what would come later, built on a base of Delta blues and hip-shaking gospel. Elvis changed everything: sex, politics and especially music'.
Teenagers in the 1950s and '60s turned Elvis Presley into an icon. His shaking hips and curled lips sent rock 'n' roll shockwaves reverberating around the world and challenged prevailing notions about sex, race and class. On January 8, 2010 as we celebrated what would have been his 75th birthday on January 8th, we should take note of the impact he had on the culture.

the Elvis story is especially potent, as we're all finding out again through the BBC's celebration of what would have been his 75th birthday this coming Friday, January 8th. I made two of Radio 2's contributions, the oral history show Don't Start Me Talking About... Elvis (BBC) and Suzi Quatro's Elvis (BBC). These are two more versions of Presley's story, one told from the perspective of British Elvis fans, the other putting right a 35 year old wrong.

Graceland, the evening of Thursday January 9, 1969, one day after Elvis' 34th birthday. Elvis met with RCA producer, Felton Jarvis, in the Jungleroom to discuss going to Nashville to record what he hoped would put him back on top of the charts. Marty Lacker was sitting there in the Jungleroom that evening, seething, as he listened to Elvis and Felton finalize the dates for Nashville. He fought back his frustration. Elvis snapped at him, 'What the hell's the matter with you?' and Lacker got the opening he needed to lay it on the line one last time: 'I just wish for once you'd try Chips Moman and his rhythm section, they're great Elvis'. And Elvis said, 'Well, maybe someday I will'.

Elvis 75: Good Rockin' Tonight is packaged in a sturdy black box that contains an 80-page booklet with lots of iconic photographs, intelligent liner notes by culture critic Billy Altman, and an informative discography. More importantly, the sound quality is first rate. The songs sound bright and shiny, the way this kind of pop music should be. One can hear every nuance of the King's voice, whether he's hitting a low note, sighing into the microphone, or reaching back for operatic effect.

This is without doubt the best Elvis Presley photo book I have seen. It covers in great style, Elvis' life in Las Vegas from 1956 to 1976 in pictures.
