'Black Star': David Bowie's Connection to Elvis Presley

Like most children of the 1950s, David Bowie considered Elvis a mythic figure. The pair, who would go on to share a record label, RCA, in the 1970s, also happened to be born on the same day. In an interview with Q in 1997 Bowie said of the date: 'I couldn't believe it', he was a major hero of mine. And I was probably stupid enough to believe that having the same birthday as him actually meant something'. And his 69th birthday, and the musical 'Lazarus' - has led back to Elvis. On this week's New York Times Popcast, the philosopher Simon Critchley, whose book 'Bowie' was released in 2014, points to the rare Elvis song 'Black Star', an alternate version of 'Flaming Star' from the 1960 Western of the same name.

'Last Stint At The International' CD from Straight Arrow

The 'Last Stint At The International' CD from Straight Arrow follows the previous release 'Solid As Rock' that received a great deal of acclaim from the fans, who praised the quality of Elvis' performance as well as the good audio. Some even stated that we had 'undersold' this release, and that the sound-quality of the recording is better than what was stated in our publicity. We at Straight Arrow believe that self-praise is no praise at all; we prefer to let our product speak for itself, which is also why we have built up a loyal following over the years.

Review : The Impossible Dream FTD CD

The Impossible Dream captures Elvis Presley at the start of his fourth Las Vegas season beginning on January 26th 1971 and marks the first time RCA/BMG/FTD have officially released live recordings from this year. Although three other soundboards have been unofficially released from the same engagement, thankfully FTD decided to issue the previously unreleased January 28th dinner show along with several bonus tracks.

'Elvis and Nixon' movie revealed - and it is a Comedy

The plot for the 'Elvis and Nixon' movie has been revealed with the release of the first trailer - and it is a COMEDY. The movie starring Michael Shannon and Kevin Spacey as Elvis Presley and Richard Nixon is scheduled for release in April 2016 and it looks like it will be a fun comedy. As it turns out, the movie is NOT about Elvis' visit to the White House' meeting President Richard Nixon in the Oval office on December 21, 1970, instead it is BASED on it, taking one fact and making a NON serious movie - well in fact it is clearly a very amusing comedy!!! View the trailer.

'How RCA Brought Elvis To Europe' from FTD Books (W/ Unreleased 1956 Vinyl EP)

Follow That Dream (FTD Books) will release a new book, 'How RCA Brought Elvis To Europe'. This beautifully designed book contains unseen pictures and follows Elvis ascent from hottest act in The South via US stardom to becoming RCA Victor's spearhead as the company launched the RCA label worldwide in 1956. It goes on to show how Europe was completely won over by the early 1960's. And did Elvis really pose a threat to communist Eastern Europe when he served as a US Soldier in West Germany? Boy, he sure did. All these topics and plenty more are covered in How RCA Brought Elvis to Europe. And not to be forgotten: free with the book's first edition comes an Unreleased 1956 Vinyl EP.

Review : King Creole Frame By Frame 400 Page Hardcover Book

'They' say 'don't judge a book by its cover, but you can with King Creole Frame by Frame, it is a fine book and an equally fine start to the FTD, 'Elvis In Hollywood' book series. This release offers anyone interested in the movie a fantastic photographic and written word account. The book is hardcover, it well researched and well presented - and as the fantastic glossy cover indicates - the book is high quality throughout. The work of true Elvis fans, Erik Lorentzen and Pål Granlund and published by the Elvis Follow That Dream Collectors Label.

Interview with Terry Blackwood and Jim Murray

When The Imperials first worked with Elvis during the May 1966 'How Great Thou Art' sessions, he told them that he had been an admirer of their music for years. Murray and Blackwood were not singing with The Imperials yet at that point, but they were there when Elvis returned to live performances in 1969. The Imperials continued to sing back-up for Elvis until the fall of 1971, and can be seen in 'That's The Way It Is'. They recorded in the studio with him in May / June 1971, where Elvis recorded the Grammy Award winning album 'He Touched Me'. Because of Presley's love for Gospel music, Murray and Blackwood got to know him quite well, and in the following interview they shed some light on their relationship with him.

Interview with Ronnie Tutt

'On the drums from Dallas, Texas, is hard-working Ronnie Tutt', is how Elvis usually introduced Ronnie on stage, but I don't think that any kind of introduction is really necessary for our readers. Not only did he play drums for Elvis from 1969 to 1977, but he's also a highly regarded session-drummer that has worked with the likes of Neil Diamond and Elvis Costello.

Graceland, Before Elvis Presley

Ruth Cobb is one of the few people outside Elvis Presley's family to visit the upstairs of Graceland. It was before it opened as a tourist attraction, and Cobb, who lived there before Elvis, soon learned her old upstairs bedroom had been turned into a music room. She had grown up at Graceland as an only child. When she married Charles Cobb, they remained at Graceland with her parents at first while Ruth toured the country as part of a professional harp ensemble. Her father, Dr. Thomas Moore, was a prominent surgeon and urologist.

Interview with Scotty Moore

On March 28th, 1998, Scotty and D.J. Fontana performed at an Elvis convention here in Europe. That same evening, I interviewed them both in Scotty's hotelroom. Actually, it wasn't easy to find good questions, as Scotty's That's All Right Elvis and Peter Guralnick's Last Train To Memphis describe the early years in wonderful detail. Nevertheless, the interviews were quite interesting in many ways. Especially Scotty is very straightforward and outspoken, and his viewpoints shed a new light on various issues for me.

Interview with Jerry Scheff

So many singers sing a song, and they're thinking about the way they're going to sing - the projection, the phrasing and so forth. When Elvis sang a song, it was just going through him, and it came out to the people that way. He was probably better at that than anybody that ever lived.

Interview with Shaun 'Sherrill' Nielsen

It's not a secret that Elvis loved the voice of tenor Shaun 'Sherrill' Nielsen. During a 1970 Las Vegas show, Presley introduced him as: 'The greatest tenor in Gospel music'.

Interview with D.J. Fontana

Dominic Joseph Fontana was born on March 15, 1931 in Shreveport, Louisiana. It was in Shreveport that D.J. Fontana started his career - as the staff drummer for the Louisiana Hayride. In 1954, when Elvis Presley was starting to make inroads in the Mid-South region as an up and coming act to be reckoned with, he and his band, which then included the legendary Scotty Moore on lead guitar, Bill Black on bass and Elvis doing the vocals and playing rhythm acoustic guitar, were knocking out audiences with their signature, seminal acoustic hybrid rockabilly/R&B sound, which, while rocking, did not as yet include drums.

Interview with Glen D. Hardin

Glen D. Hardin played in Elvis' 70s road-band for six years, tickling the ivories and arranging things like 'The Wonder Of You', 'Let It Be Me' and 'I Just Can't Help Believing'. Before that, he was an in demand session-musician, arranger and songwriter, working with artists like Merle Haggard, George Jones, The Everly Brothers and Ricky Nelson. After leaving Elvis in 1976, he has toured with Emmylou Harris, John Denver, The Crickets and, since 1997, with Elvis The Concert. In this interview we talked about his years with The King.

Interview with FTDs Ernst Jørgensen

First off, congratulations with the new 'Silver Screen Stereo' CD. This FTD release contains quite a few surprises, like for instance stereo outtakes of Loving You, Don't Leave Me Now and Jailhouse Rock, as well as some amazing alternates from 'Viva Las Vegas'. Were these tapes acquired recently?

Review : Teenagers' Hero 1956 Volume 1

The Book, Teenagers' Hero is the definitive book - documentary - of Elvis' live performances in early 1956, with than 400 pages, 30cm x 21cm sized and featuring 445 photos mostly unpublished and never put in the right context. The book is of a high quality design (soft cover 300g, cloth binding, and 150 gram glossy paper). There were only 1000 copies printed, and each one is numbered - this is one book not to be missed!

Interview with Duke Bardwell | Elvis' Bass Player January 1974 through 1975

Duke Bardwell worked both on stage and in the studio with The King in the mid-70s, and in all he played bass on 181 concerts. Yet he's always avoided media exposure about his association with Elvis, until now.

Interview with songwriter Michael Jarrett ... I'm Leavin'

Interview with songwriter Michael Jarrett who wrote both I'm Leavin' as well as a Christmas song cut at the same sessions, the bluesy I'll Be Home On Christmas Day, which Elvis recorded in 1971.

Marilyn Evans and the Million Dollar Quartet

Elvis Presley : Rising Sun and other Horses at Graceland

In 1966 Elvis asked Jerry Schilling if it would be alright with me if he bought a horse for hid girlfriend, Sandy Kawelo because he wanted to buy one for Priscilla, and wanted her to have someone to ride with. Unreleased outtakes on Elvis' Golden Records Vol. 3 FTD Classic Album 2 CD

There is a stack of unreleased outtakes on the soon to be released, 'Elvis Golden Records Vol. 3' 2-CD from Follow That Dream (FTD). It features a 7" digipack presentation (classic album series) with a 12-page booklet. By the time Elvis' Golden Records Vol. 3 was released in August 1963, no one in rock 'n' roll up to that point, other than Elvis, had ever legitimately earned a second 'greatest hits' volume, much less a third. It also embodied the best commercial examples of Presley's new post-Army maturity, as both vocalist and musician, and the songs featured on this album achieved an unparalleled level of global chart success by any artist between 1960 and 1963.

Radio Special, 'If I Can Dream': Elvis Presley With The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra'

Elvis Presley never got the chance to sing in front of a symphony orchestra. But decades after his death, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra got the chance to play behind him. Priscilla Presley worked with producers Don Reedman and Nick Patrick to combine some of Elvis' classic vocal performances with a big, lush sound. Plus, they invited special guests to join - Duane Eddy, Il Volo and Michael Buble, who sang a duet with Elvis. Anthony DeCurtis hosts this one-hour special that chronicles how the project came about through interviews with Priscilla, Don, Nick and Michael, and it features a lot of music.

Elvis' Golden Records Vol. 3 FTD Classic Album 2 CD

'Elvis Golden Records Vol. 3' is a new 2-CD release in the Follow That Dream (FTD) labels classic album series. It features a 7" digipack with 12-page booklet.

Elvis Presley: How Sun Records boss Sam Phillips discovered a star in 1954

Sam Phillips had been thinking more and more that the key lay in the connection between the races, in what they had in common far more than what kept them apart. There were always going to be 'some bastard white people', he knew, but far more to the point was the spiritual connection that he had always known to exist between black and white, the cultural heritage that they all shared. 'Not to copy each other but to just - hey, this is all we've got and we're going to give it to you. This is our Broadway play. This is our Tin Pan Alley. This is what it is. We hope you likeit'.

Sam Phillips: The Man Who Invented Rock 'n' Roll 2 CD and 3 LP Releases

Sam Phillips: The Man Who Invented Rock 'n' Roll is a 45-track 2 x CD companion to Peter Guralnick's forthcoming biography of the same name, and a personal, idiosyncratic survey of one of the most important bodies of work in recording history. Also released as a deluxe 3 LP Record set, it features songs mostly spanning the years 1950-1961, hand-selected by Guralnick, who also wrote an exclusive track-by-track essay for the release. Mostly spanning the years 1950-1961, the set shines a light on Phillips' unique approach to recording, his cosmic genius, and revolutionary role in the evolution of blues, country, R&B, gospel and the birth of rock 'n' roll. Featuring big hits, near misses, and never-even-close tracks.

Review : If I Can Dream: Elvis Presley With The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra CD

There have been several attempts at an Elvis Presley remix album, none of which have worked. This one does! The songs don't and were never intended to replace the original masters, nothing ever could, but to my ears Sony Music have succeeded where others have failed – they have produced an album that that while remaining faithful to the style that was Elvis Presley have created a new listening experience. And this is what the album is, a new listening experience, not a replacement of his body of work. And importantly it is an album. One that Elvis would have - could have - gone into the studio to cut.

Never before have we seen an Elvis Presley concert from the 1950's with sound. Until Now! This is an excellent release no fan should be without it.

The 'parade' footage is good to see as it puts you in the right context with color and b&w footage. The interviews of Elvis' Parents are well worth hearing too. The afternoon show footage is wonderful and electrifying : Here is Elvis in his prime rocking and rolling in front of 11.000 people. Highly recommended.
