I enjoy exploring all different areas of Elvis' career. With Follow That Dream's recent announcement that Amarillo '77 will be among its June CD releases, I thought this would be a good time to take a look back at the 1977 recordings available to this point. Not including FTD's New Year's Eve audience recording, there have been three key official releases of 1977 concert material in the years since the death of Elvis:

Ed Enoch, the only remaining member of the group, The Stamps, has apparently told a US news service, Times Record News, that the 'Elvis Presley In Concert' show will tour 'Europe, Asia, Australia, Canada and Hawaii in 2012'. Both EPE and the previous Australian tour promoter have declined to make any specific statement. And as we are only in May this is of no surprise as if it were the case that the tour is headed our way, negotiations may not be complete or venues not 100% determined. Treat this as a rumour for now!

The Elvis Files Series : Now Seven (7) Huge Volumes
As we have previously announced, the release for The Elvis Files Volume 4 issue has been postponed. The reason is that author Erik Lorentzen recently purchased two huge photo collections and he wants to include as many unseen photos as possible from 1969-70. The original planned period for Volume 4 was 1966-1969, but now it will cover 1965-1968. Then the next book Volume 5 will be two years; 1969-1970. And after that there will be two volumes from the seventies. So now all together there will now be 7 volumes in The Elvis Files series. The new release date for Volume 4 is now pinned to August 16.

Budapest Names Small Park After Elvis Presley
Budapest's city council has now approved a plan to name a small park after Elvis Presley in commemoration of Elvis Presleys support for Hungary's anti-Soviet revolution of 1956. Budapest mayor Istvan Tarlos said Wednesday that a plot near the Margaret Bridge will be called Elvis Presley Park to honor the singer's 'sincere sympathy' toward the short-lived uprising. Elvis is being recognised for his support of the unsuccessful 1956 Hungarian revolution, which aimed to overthrow the country's Soviet government.

'The climax came when he closed with the all-out rocker 'Hound Dog', the signal for the greatest bout of unlimited pandemonium, many of the younger girls going completely berserk! Then came the trickiest part of all - 'Operation Exit Elvis' - to get Presley out of the building before the crowd could tear him apart from sheer adoration. This was executed with all split-second timing of an army manoeuvre. Taking no encores and no final bows, he departed with the speed of a sprinter, racing from stage to a fast car, already moving as the singer got in. Elvis Presleys National TV Appearances In The 1950s
Elvis Presley first appeared on national television in the USA on January 28, 1956, on The Dorsey Brothers Stage Show in New York. On Monday, January 23, 1956, Elvis, Scotty Moore, Bill Black and D.J. Fontana rehearsed in Memphis for their television debut. Elvis and Colonel Parker flew to New York on Wednesday the 25th. They stayed at the Warwick Hotel on 52nd Street. Elvis ate dinner in the Hickory House restaurant the night they arrived and did some sightseeing on the 26th. Perhaps as an indicator of things to come, Scotty, Bill and D.J. were not afforded a plane trip and drove from Memphis to New York and arrived on January 27th.

This absolutely excellent tape, from the Friday, May 24, 1974 MS, was the very first available soundboard recording from Lake Tahoe, released in 1995 by Fort Baxter. At this show Elvis was heard taking a personal request for 'Spanish Eyes', not something he did too often. Now the performance is presented by GRM at the correct speed, with improved sound and in a super-deluxe package. Along with a booklet filled with Tahoe '74 facts, photos and detailed liner notes. This show captures Elvis being happy and giving his best.

Arizona Benefit concert, March 25, 1961 we have have some great photos of Elvis' arrival in Hawaii, of the concert, and a video of Elvis and Priscilla touring the completed facility in May 1968. More than 4,000 fans attended the concert, purchasing tickets ranging in price from $3 to $100. The concert, which featured Elvis Presley and an all-star lineup of entertainers, raised just over $54,000 toward the $500,000 goal. Many public and private donations followed the show, and the USS Arizona Memorial was dedicated on May 30, Memorial Day, 1962. (Which is fitting as the film of Elvis' arrival is actually from April 7, 1962 with Elvis in Hawaii to film his movie Girls! Girls! Girls!).

Elvis Presley and Arlene Cogan
Arlene Cogan met Elvis when she was 14 in 1957. Her uncle got her into the press conference and front row concert tickets for Elvis' show in Chicago. At the press conference, Elvis noticed her right away and told her to visit him in Memphis. Arlene did a few weeks later and became a part of 'Elvis' gang' along with other teens Frances and Heidi. They hung out at Graceland at the pool and inside, had meals with Vernon and Gladys, went to the roller rink and the fairgrounds and spent Christmas of 1957 with Elvis and his parents. The were expected not to date anyone and remain virgins. Caught in a Trap oozes quality ... the major part of the book is reserved for the photographs that Laurens took during the course of three of Elvis' performances. And they really are excellent photographs! Over some 100 pages, the photographs, apparently in chronological order, in both black and white and full colour, show Elvis both having fun on stage and belting out for all he's worth. One sequence of pages of almost full-length close-ups are shots taken rapidly one after the other and give an excellent idea of Elvis in full flow.

The 'parade' footage is good to see as it puts you in the right context with color and b&w footage. The interviews of Elvis' Parents are well worth hearing too. The afternoon show footage is wonderful and electrifying : Here is Elvis in his prime rocking and rolling in front of 11.000 people. Highly recommended.
