So what's the sense in the latest - '
Elvis 75: Good Rockin' Tonight'? Ernst: With the new technology we can transfer the tape with a higher resolution. We can work with it in 24-bit, 32-bit environment, and make sure we get as close to the exact sound as the analog tape. We've taken every one of Elvis' 711 masters and tried to do a better job on them. On some the improvement will be more important than on others.
James Reyne has recorded an album containing his versions of songs that have been made famous by Elvis Presley. The album is titled TCB and is to be released on April 9, 2010. James Reyne is well known in Australia both as a solo artist and an original member of the the band Australian Crawl. Today I recieved an advance copy of the CD and to my ears the highlights are
Burning Love,
Girls, Girls, Girls and
Return To Sender.
The next release from Straight Arrow (SA 2009-14-02), will be the
audience recorded Las Vegas December 4th, 1976 Dinner show. Together with Opening night (released as 'Last Vegas Opening Night', SA 2009-12A/B-02) it is the strongest concert of Elvis' last Las Vegas season, containing excellent performances of 'Tryin' To Get To You', 'America', 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', 'Hurt' and 'How Great Thou Art'. An absolute highlight is a mesmerizing recitation of 'What Now My Love'.
Suzi Quatro has finally visited Elvis Presley's
Graceland, 35 years after not taking Elvis up on his personal invitation in 1974. She was on tour in Memphis at that time and she had her version of
All Shook Up on the American charts. Elvis heard this and phoned her up and said 'do you want to come over?'
There have been a lot of 'rehearsal' Elvis CDs to come out, but this one, apropriatly titled, Elvis On Tour : The Rehearsals is by far the best. First of all, it almost sounds like a studio album. The songs are mostly complete without a bunch of mistakes and a do-overs and most sound really great. There isn't any joking around, each track pretty much jumps strait to the next song.
The
Made In Memphis FTD CD is another in an extended string of vault excavations from Elvis Presley's apparently inexhaustible library of alternate, unused, and unfinished takes, to be issued by the custom label
Follow That Dream through RCA-BMG. For starters, as with many of the unused takes, because there's been no dubbing or the loss of even a single generation, you get a much closer sound than on most of Elvis' released recordings, even the properly remastered editions.
Spinout! This is a great album, a wonderful listening experience. From the classic title track and the lovely ballads such as 'Am I Ready' and 'All That I Am' to the great rock numbers 'Never Say Yes' and 'I'll Be Back' there appears to be something for everybody in this package. 'Never Say Yes' is a wonderful song and is even more enjoyable when heard on its out-take forms and alos do treat yourself to the out-take of the ballad 'Am I Ready', you will find it fuller and, even it is hard to admit, better than the original take on many levels.
The label 'Venus Productions' will soon release the double CD set
Bringing It All Back Home featuring two concerts recorded in Elvis' hometown. The first CD will contain the matinee performance of March 16, 1974 , his first live appearance in Memphis since 1961. From the first generation soundboard tape.
Part of Beale Street has been renamed in honor of Bernard Lansky.
Follow That Dream records, the collectors division of RCA have done it again with another superb re-packaging in their latest series of original LP re-issues. Turning their attention to the 1967 'Clambake' movie soundtrack. Not a classic film by any accounts, it came from a very low period in Elvis' movie career, probably the lowest in fact as Elvis became physically ill during production and sruggled to motivate himself for this one.
Review of both concerts in the
Rockin' Across Texas 2 CD Set from FTD.
Following is the complete track listing with samples of the liner notes for
Elvis Presley: 50 Australian Top Ten Hits 1956-1977 to be released in Australia by Sony on January 8, 2010.
Sony will release
Elvis 75 - Good Rockin' Tonight, the ultimate career-spanning collection of seminal recordings by Elvis Presley, in commemoration of the King of Rock & Roll's 75th birthday (January 8, 2010).
If you don't think of Elvis Presley as a romantic guy, then your mind will be quickly changed by an enlightening new DVD,
Love Me Tender ... The Love Songs of Elvis Presley. If you were around during Elvis' prime, you already know he possessed one of the most charismatic personalities in modern music.
The 'bonus' track is THE performance highlight from his Hampton Roads show two days later (by which time he had the Flu!) thankfully it's a reasonably performed 'request' for the 'Return To Sender' fan Club and I'm sure they must have been delighted. I recommend this CD because the performance is just passable from a dreadful tour and the sound balance is impressive in its clarity - far easier on the ears than listening to FTD America. I'll certainly be playing this
New Haven '76 CD a few times before I stack it away on the shelf.
The Memphis Convention and Visitor's Bureau is trying to preserve the memory of a record store, put on the map by the king of rock and roll, by giving Pop Tunes an official place in history.
Elvis: A Tribute to the King of Rock 'N' Roll is a 144-page 'scrapbook' tracing Elvis' rise from the poverty of East Tupelo, Mississippi, to the elegance of Graceland. What makes this publication unique is the
use of replicas throughout the book, items like his
birth certificate, concert and movie posters, and event tickets. There is even a menu from one of his gigs in Las Vegas. It is a must-have for any Elvis collector.
I have just been listening to two CDR copies (Disc 1 and 2), made directly from the Sony master for
Elvis Presley: 50 Australian Top Ten Hits 1956-1977, and they sound fantastic. Not just the songs themselves, not just the quality, but to hear each track in the order that they charted, and then getting into the 60s all of a sudden a 50s recording comes on and it's just magic!!!

The track of the Zippin Pippin abruptly ends where a section was destroyed Monday morning. Robert Lipscomb, city director of Housing and Community Development, said the section was torn out to see if the famous roller coaster was salvageable. Demolition crews tore out a hunk of the Zippin Pippin Monday morning as part of the project to sweep away the remains of Libertyland. Only a chunk was torn out, to see if the famous roller coaster was salvageable, said Robert Lipscomb, city director of Housing and Development.
Sony Music Entertainment will celebrate the 75th anniversary of The King's birthday in style with the release of
Elvis Presley: 50 Australian Top Ten Hits 1956-1977 in Australia on January 8, 2010. This double CD set is the first ever Elvis Presley Australian hits compilation. Together with the 50
hit songs, an 18 page booklet containing specially written liner notes and images of original RCA releases, and CD label art inspired by his first album release, the set provides a unique insight into Elvis Presley's popularity in Australia, a country where he managed an incredible twenty-year streak of placing hits on the singles charts.

In its October 9, 1968, issue,
Variety reported that, 'One of the biggest long-running attractions to hit Australia is not even a person but a car - Elvis' Gold Cadillac'. Bill Walsh, general manager for RCA Victor Records in the Southwest Pacific area, had arranged with
Colonel Parker for Presley's car to be brought to Australia for a year-long tour to benefit the charitable causes of the Benevolent Society of New South Wales.
The King and Dr. Nick reveals the truth about Elvis' death from the doctor who spent eleven years as 'the King's' personal physician, father-figure, and confidant - 'Dr. Nick'. Dr. Nichopoulos spent a decade with Elvis on the road and at Graceland, trying to maintain the precarious health of one of the world's greatest entertainers. But on August 16, 1977, he found himself in the ambulance with Elvis on that fateful last trip to the ER. He signed the death certificate. From that day forward, Dr. Nick became the focus of a media witch hunt which threatened his life and all but destroyed his professional reputation. Now, for the first time, Dr. Nick reveals the true story - not the version formed by years of tabloid journalism and gross speculation.

One day in 1975, he took me to his son, Sean's playroom, where he kept one of his prized possessions, a vintage jukebox. Plugging it in, he punched one
Elvis Presley record after another and bopped around playfully. As Elvis sang
Don't Be Cruel in the background, John recalled his first and only meeting with our mutual rock hero. It was a story he relished sharing as much as he did his Beatles memories.
'Elvis: My Best Man: My Lifelong Friendship with Elvis Presley' by George Klein. 'George, bravo! I learned some new things about you and your life, especially the earlier years. I feel you capture the essence of Elvis not only in dialogue, but also in giving the reader a sense of his personality, humor, and his spirit of play... I know that Elvis would be proud that you’ve remained his loyal and lifelong friend.'

Australian Elvis Presley Fan Clubs were advised in mid 1967 that Elvis' Gold Cadillac would be coming to Australia. I received an advance copy of the book
'Baby, Let's Play House - Elvis Presley and the Women Who Loved Him' and have to report to you that it does NOT deserve reading as it contains lies about Elvis, unsubstantiated claims and allegations from unreliable sources such as Byron Raphael and Child Bride author Suzanne Finstad who is credited for 'fact checking chapters', which is a joke in itself. And totally uncalled for explicit discussion of very private matters. So for all those that have emailed me in the past months saying we should not be reporting on her book,
you were correct! It is such a shame, but this book is trash, Alanna's Trash.

The book;
Elvis 1956 by photojournalist Alfred Wertheimer will be released in November.
In 1956, a twenty-one-year-old Elvis Presley was at the beginning of his remarkable and unparalleled career. Photojournalist Alfred Wertheimer was asked by Presley's new label, RCA Victor, to photograph the rising star for a one-day assignment that quickly developed into an odyssey. With unimpeded access to the young performer, Wertheimer was able to capture the unguarded and everyday moments in Elvis' life during March and July of that year, the pivotal year that made Elvis' career - taking him from virtual obscurity to the verge of international stardom and his crowning as 'The King of Rock 'n' Roll'.

Tom Jones says he was once left shocked when he found Elvis' gun in his dressing room lavatory. The veteran singer struck up a close friendship with Elvis and they would often spend time together when they were in the same city on tour. But on one occasion, after Jones appeared at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, he was stunned to find a silver-plated Colt .45 automatic pistol on his toilet cistern after Presley had used the bathroom. Jones tried to discreetly hand it back, only to see Presley shrug off the incident.

In November 1998, I found out that a record I bought in Memphis in 1968 is actually the original master of Elvis Presley's first ever record. 'That's All Right Mama'. It was recorded on July 5th 1954 by Sam C. Phillips at the Sun Studios, 706 Union Avenue, Memphis and was originally released as Sun 209 on July 19th 1954.

The Steve Allen Show'. Then again - the day after, Elvis records
Hound Dog and

July 4 concert at 'Russwood Park' stadium -- and much more.

The package features the 7" inch digipack format with 12-page booklet. I opened my mailbox Friday to find a great surprise- a preview copy of International's latest release 'Showroom Internationale' ! So, since someone has seen fit to give me a copy, and I've now had appropriate time to listen to it, I've decided to review it for everyone: The second disc features the
February 23rd Dinner Show, which
simply the best show yet released from 1971. The January 28th Midnight Show previously released as 'Lean, Mean, and Kickin' Butt', in this release it
sounds better than ever ...
Here is a poem by club member Maxine Graybill that we really enjoyed and wanted to bring to you on this day, 32 years after Elvis passed and 12 since Maxine originally wrote it. 'I wrote this on a plane trip from Tampa to Memphis on the 20th Anniversary. A lady sat down next to me, asked where I was going. Memphis I said. Oh you have family there? Yes you could say that, I'm going up for Elvis week. She looked at me like I had suddenly grown an extra head. I politely excused myself and started to write. Hope you enjoy it ...'

This is an excellent release no fan should be without it.
The 'parade' footage is good to see as it puts you in the right context with color and b&w footage. The interviews of Elvis' Parents are well worth hearing too. The afternoon show footage is wonderful and electrifying : Here is Elvis in his prime rocking and rolling in front of 11.000 people. Highly recommended.
