Sue McCasland was among the very few fans who were able to take pictures. There was a much more intimate atmosphere in Tahoe, because of a smaller showroom, so the risk was higher to get caught while sneaking cameras into the showroom and taking pictures during the concert. Elvis: Return to Tupelo DVD
Elvis: Return to Tupelo is a 90 minute program narrated by Kris Kristofferson, plus one hour of bonus features. Understanding the Elvis phenomenon, and his impact on the world, requires going back to his origins in rural Tupelo, Mississippi where he grew up as one of the poorest boys in town. His emergence on the scene represented a seismic shift in the culture - race, sex and class. What happened here set the stage for him to become the star that still shines brightly today. Kris Kristofferson was asked if he would be interested to narrate this DVD. Kris asked to see the script and he liked it, so he agreed to do it. He's an Elvis fan and after the narration recording session, he said it was 'an honor' to do it. He felt it was respectful.

On July 7, 1955 Elvis purchased his second Pink Cadillac, a new 1955 Cadillac Fleetwood Series 60 in blue with black roof, to replace the Cadillac that was burned. He had the car repainted by a neighbor who designed a pink color for Elvis and named the color 'Elvis Rose'. This is the one that he gave to his mother, probably the most famous car in the world. Gladys would always proudly point to it as 'her' car.

It sneaks up on you and provides some light and ultimately enjoyable entertainment. US Highway 45 in the state of Tennessee was renamed the 'Rockabilly Highway' in honor of Elvis Presley and Carl Perkins. On Friday, June 27, Tennessee State Representative Jimmy Elridge presented Henry Harrison from the Rockabilly Hall Of Fame the new highway sign in Jackson, Tn. Rockabilly Highway runs from Carl Perkins hometown of Jackson, Tenn., to the city where Elvis Presley was born, in Tupelo, Miss.

'Daddy-O' Dewey Phillips was born on May 13, 1926 - Dewey was one of rock 'n' roll's pioneering disk jockeys, along the lines of Cleveland's Alan Freed, before Alan Freed. Starting his radio career in 1949 on WHBQ-AM in Memphis, he was the city's leading radio personality for nine years and was the first to simulcast his 'Red, Hot & Blue' show on radio and television. In July 1954, he was the first DJ to broadcast the young Elvis Presley's debut record, That's All Right / Blue Moon Of Kentucky (Sun 209).

Pouring through celebrity images this week, as I usually do in this job, my eyes were immediately drawn to pictures of Riley Keough, granddaughter of Presley, at a Hollywood event (see right). For some reason I couldn't quite take my eyes off her, and I wasn't exactly sure why. Until it hit me - just like her grandfather before her, Keough possesses that extra something, a definite je nes sais quoi. For all the non-believers out there, Elvis does live on... in the spirit of this 19-year-old girl.

Elvis Presley was more curiosity than singing sensation when the Hillbilly Cat and his pink-and-white Cadillac arrived in Ocala on Tuesday, May 10, 1955. No one — not even Elvis — dreamed the skinny, 20-year-old kid with the bedroom eyes and long sideburns would one day be viewed as 'The King of Rock 'n' Roll'. Elvis was eight months away from exploding on the national consciousness with the release of 'Heartbreak Hotel', which would sell 300,000 copies within a week of its release.

Alanna Nash working on new book
In 2007, journalist and biographer Alanna Nash interviewed a number of Elvis' female co-stars, family members, and friends for a Ladies Home Journal article titled 'The Women Who Loved Elvis'. Now she's turning the idea into a book to be published in time for Elvis' 75th birthday in January 2010. Nash reports the book will be the first comprehensive look at Elvis purely from the female prospective.
Hugh Jarrett of The Jordanaires Dies at 78
Hugh Jarrett, the bass singing member of The Jordanaires died May 31, 2008 at the age of 78. Hugh's death resulted from injuries sustained in an auto accident March 25th. He had been hospitalized since that time.

Elvis is quite good here in King Creole, bringing an obviously heartfelt and earnest, restless energy to his role that no doubt was encouraged by Curtiz.

Never before have we seen an Elvis Presley concert from the 1950's with sound. Until Now! This is an excellent release no fan should be without it.
The 'parade' footage is good to see as it puts you in the right context with color and b&w footage. The interviews of Elvis' Parents are well worth hearing too. The afternoon show footage is wonderful and electrifying : Here is Elvis in his prime rocking and rolling in front of 11.000 people. Highly recommended.
