March 23, 1956, Elvis played D.C. for the first and last time. The show, unlike the boat, rocked. The featured act was Elvis Presley, a 21-year-old just starting to light up the charts. The rest of 1956 would see the whole world catch on to the former truck driver from Memphis, who'd walked into Sun Studio three years earlier ...

Elvis at 21: New York to Memphis is a book of exquisite Presley photos taken in 1956 by
Alfred Wertheimer. These are remarkably intimate and revealing portraits, mostly shot 'fly-on-the-wall' fashion as Wertheimer followed Elvis in the recording studio, on a train ride and at home in Memphis, with his parents and friends. Through it all, Wertheimer was apparently so unobtrusive that Presley never seemed self-conscious. The photos, including ones of the actual TV show performance, are splendid.

He got calls from
Frank Sinatra and
President Nixon. He would have me go to the phone and say,
is this really President Nixon? Is this really Frank Sinatra? How do I know it's really you? Because he doesn't want to talk unless it's really you. Then when we called
President Nixon back at the White House and I said, Elvis Presley is calling, they said,

One project that may not be making its way to DVD -- at least in the lavish form that had been expected -- is Solt and Malcolm Leo's 1981 Presley documentary 'This Is Elvis'. The film, a combination of archival news and performance footage as well as dramatic re-creations, was released in a now out-of-print VHS edition in 1982.
In 1990, rock filmmaker and archivist Andrew Solt took a big gamble. He put everything on the line to purchase the rights to the complete archive of Ed Sullivan television shows. The jewels in the Sullivan crown, however, are the three shows Elvis Presley appeared on in late 1956 and early 1957.

In a previous article I dealt with the period from 1963 to 1968 when Elvis and his fans suffered from a poor selection of tracks which were chosen for release as singles. I outlined what I thought was an alternative release schedule that would in my opinion have kept him firmly in the Top Ten. In this article I examine the 1970's in much the same way.
