Elvis Checked In, Nationally, With Heartbreak Hotel

Fifty years ago, it was as haunting and wounded an opening line as rock 'n' roll had ever known - 'Well, since my baby left me ...' Drenched in reverb, though not as much as memory might suggest, 'Heartbreak Hotel', signaled Elvis Presley's major label move to RCA and onto the national radar when it was released in 1956.

Elvis, 1955-1956 - A Star Is Born

In Memphis, a home-grown kid by the name of Elvis Presley was poised on the threshold of fame and fortune. It was an exciting time for the 20-year-old Elvis. One man who had heard of him was Robert Dye. The photographs Dye took backstage at the Shell that night of a fresh, young, cocky, exuberant Elvis, all decked out in a see-through lace shirt, pegged pants, and white bucks, were the first of several dozen shots Dye would snap of Elvis over the next 13 months.

Elvis: The Way It Should Have Been?

Back in the sixties one of the many frustrations suffered by Elvis fans was the way RCA went about choosing his singles between March 1963 and the end of 1968. The enigma of Suppose

Suppose is not the greatest song Elvis Presley ever recorded but it is, for me, one of the most underrated. At a time - the mid 1960s - when you can almost hear the self-belief seeping from him on some recordings, Elvis was unusually intrigued by this quiet chilling ballad. Some fans have suggested this song may have inspired John Lennon's utopian anthem Imagine. Suppose was recorded in the summer of 1967, Imagine was recorded - and released - in 1971.

Review - Elvis The Early Years Mini Series

One of the great things about reviewing television programs as part of my job is getting to see the shows before they go to air, often in a more intact state than when they finally are telecast. So, I should tell you that this review is based on the full version of 'Elvis The Early Years'. By the time Channel Ten airs it in Australia on November 6, over 30 minutes will have been cut. And, to be honest, that can only be a good thing: the less that is seen of this production, the better as far as I'm concerned.

Review - Elvis Today FTD CD

In general this double CD is a nice addition to the Elvis collection. I found it interesting to hear these rough mixes, although they provided less 'news' than I hoped for. As for outtakes, I would rate take 1 of 'Bringin' It Back' as the highlight. This is a true outtake, where Elvis times the phrasing quite differently.

Looked at as a whole, the book deals with Elvis' place in music, his influences, and his own abilities and input, intelligently and fairly.
