Austin Butler and Tom Hanks in Baz Luhrmann’s 'Elvis': Film Review

How you feel about Baz Luhrmann's Elvis will depend largely on how you feel about Baz Luhrmann's signature brash, glitter-bomb maximalism. Just the hyper-caffeinated establishing section alone - even before Austin Butler's locomotive hips start doing their herky-jerky thing when Elvis Presley takes to the stage to perform 'Heartbreak Hotel' in a rockabilly-chic pink suit - leaves you dizzy with its frenetic blast of scorching color, split screen, retro graphics and more edits per scene than a human eye can count. Add in the stratified, ear-bursting sound design and this is Baz times a bazillion.

'Elvis' gets 12-Minute Standing Ovation

The audience at the Cannes Film Festival was trembling for Austin Butler as the King in Baz Luhrmann's world premiere of 'Elvis'. The film received an uproarious 12-minute standing ovation, the longest of this year's festival so far.

Interview with Baz Luhrmann

Mr. Luhrmann did not want to make a mere biopic. He wanted to make a wildly ambitious movie about race and sex and class and music in America through three decades, the 1950s, '60s and '70s. There are three Elvises, the rock 'n' roll punk, the movie star in the Hollywood bubble, and the drug-addled, divorced Elvis in Vegas who feels 'caught in a trap', as the line from 'Suspicious Minds' goes, and shows the fatigue of being stuck as the campy character busting out of the tight white jumpsuit. 'I'm just so tired of playing Elvis Presley', he said, the year before he died.

Too Much Monkey Business | The story of Scatter, Elvis Presley's Pet Chimpanzee

In the early sixties, Elvis Presley's 'Memphis Mafia' (a bit of editorial license taken here) took on its most problematic and entertaining member, a forty-pound chimpanzee named Scatter. However, before Elvis, Scatter was a TV star, on local Memphis station WMC-TV. The program hosted by 'Captain' (actually, he preferred it spelled 'Cap'n') Bill Killebrew - well actually he wasn't really a captain of anything, kinda like 'Colonel' Tom Parker, well except Elvis' manager was an honorary one!

Riley Keough about Baz Luhrmann's movie 'Elvis'

ELVIS PRESLEY has a new biopic coming out this year, but this time it is coming from the mind of the visionary director Baz Luhrmann. Riley Keough, the daughter of Lisa Marie Presley, has now spoken out about how 'emotional' watching the iconic star's life on the big screen was, despite the 'generational trauma' the family has endured.

Lisa Marie Presley post about Baz Luhrmann's movie 'Elvis'

Lisa Marie Presley post about Baz Luhrmann's movie 'Elvis'. I do want to take a moment to let you know that I have seen Baz Luhrmann's movie 'Elvis' twice now, and let me tell you that it is nothing short of spectacular. Absolutely exquisite. Austin Butler channeled and embodied my father's heart and soul beautifully. In my humble opinion, his performance is unprecedented and FINALLY done accurately and respectfully.

What Johnny Carson really said about Elvis Presley on 'The Tonight Show'

Elvis Presley, a bona fide Greek God at age 34, flashes a lovely smile while taking questions from the press corps after his return to live performing at the Las Vegas International Hotel, August 1, 1969. A less publicized facet of Elvis Presley's fascinating character is that he admired comedy with an intense passion, staying up until the first rays of the morning light with the Memphis Mafia to screen films and television appearances from the likes of Peter Sellers, Monty Python, and Johnny Carson. Quoting entire comedy monologues or routines was a common occurrence.

Anne E. Nixon has died

Pittsburgh memories of Elvis Presley

For the record, I cried when Elvis died. Cried again the first time I toured Graceland, his Memphis, Tenn., home. And every time I heard him sing 'Don’t Cry Daddy' - so I just stopped listening to that song.

Elvis Presley | Waco and Eddie Fadal

Elvis Presley is a name that hardly needs explanation. The king of rock-and roll stands as a cultural icon to this day, but few people know of his connection to Waco and Central Texas. In 1958, at the ripe age of twenty-two, Elvis joined the United States Army and moved to Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas, for basic training.

Lindalee Wakely (Jimmy Wakely's Daughter) Remembers Elvis and Charle Hodge

For me, it was a horrible scene, Just horrible. But Elvis turned it all around. I did a Hollywood gossip column for a fan magazine called Teen Scene. You may remember it. Well, Dad had known Elvis' manager, Col. Tom Parker, and his wife, Marie, for many years. So Dad was able to get me an interview with the great Elvis who had just come back from Germany and had come out to the West Coast to make movies. The interview was going to take a place on the set of GI Blues. It really was a fantastic break for a kid like me. I knew it. I bought new shoes. I chose a new dress. I got an appointment with an expensive hairdresser. I was shaking but I was going to look sharp and make a great impression on Elvis.

'It gives me chills': Priscilla Presley on the life Elvis left behind

In the history of popular culture, few images are as iconic as those of the so-called 'king of rock and roll' Elvis Aaron Presley. With more than half a billion records sold globally since 1956, he is the best-selling solo artist in music history - his place in the history books feels assured.

Will Hutchins remembers Elvis Presley and Clambake

'T-R-O-U-B-L-E' : Jerry Chesnut Remembers Elvis Presley (And his hit song)

Jerry Chesnut : I met Elvis through a mutual friend of ours, and so called Memphis Mafia member, Lamar Fike ... in 1974 Priscilla came to see Elvis perform. They sat in the booth Elvis always reserved for her and when he spotted them, He sang Priscilla's Favorite song 'It's Midnight'. He walked to the edge of the stage, looked at her, and tears were streaming down his cheeks. He was all broke up. She was the only girl he really ever loved ... The Nashville songwriting great originally wrote the clever tune 'T-R-O-U-B-L-E' for singer Little David Wilkins, who really did play from '9 til half past 1' in a Nashville bar, and he had a stroke of genius when he realized he could rhyme certain words if he spelled them out.

How Memphis and Media Reacted to Elvis' Death

On Tuesday, Aug. 16, 1977, Rose Phillips was one of the first people in Memphis to learn firsthand of Elvis Presley's death. On that day, she had gone to a late lunch with her friend Arlene Cogan, who was former president of the Chicago Elvis Presley Fan Club and a regular visitor at Graceland, at the Piccadilly Restaurant, in a shopping center just a block from Elvis' mansion.

Co-stars remember Elvis the actor

For many, the title 'King of Rock and Roll' is reserved for one man: Elvis Presley. Unlike most departed singers who are remembered largely for their music, Elvis lives on through a phenomenal number of appearances in scripted motion pictures - 31 in all - beginning with 'Love Me Tender' in 1956 and ending 13 years later with 'Change of Habit' in 1969. His movies provide a unique glimpse into another dimension of one the twentieth century's greatest entertainers.

Elvis Presley: Singer, Actor and Football Player

Elvis : 'The thing I keep up with most is professional football'. When he wasn't on stage, in a studio or on the big screen, there's a good chance you could find Elvis Presley playing football. Elvis loved other sports, too, like karate and racquetball. But Elvis always found time for a quick game, and if he couldn't play it himself, he watched his favorite teams compete on TV. He often watched three Football games at once in the TV room at Graceland where he had installed three TV sets. Read the full article which includes 11 photos and links to more.

Her name is Judy Spreckels, and she agreed to her first sit-down interview memories were bubbling to the surface - but there were still some things Spreckels wouldn't discuss.

Elvis: Doncha' Think It's Time - A new 1958 Album CD

Doncha' Think It's Time - A new 1958 Album CD. A brand-new '58' album including amazing new spliced takes and remastered masters. On the FTD album 'King Creole new mixes of the studio masters were released, these were done by Thorne Nogar and had studio snippets, like small talk and counting of to the takes, although it is nice to have it does not play as it should. Here presented for the first time are those masters without that. Also included are some new and unreleased 'spliced takes of other songs from 1958 as well as some 'essential' home recordings, also edited for your listening pleasure. The highlight of this album must be both 'reversed' masters of the title track 'Doncha Think It's Time' for both masters four takes were used, on this album the same four takes are used, but this time they used the parts that were not released at the time so you get two COMPLETE new versions of this great song. Also not to be missed is the newly created version of 'Ain't That Loving You Baby' which starts of with the slow version and ends with the rockin' version.

Elvis 27 - Essential Sixties Splices Volume 3 CD

Elvis 27 - Essential Sixties Splices Volume 3 CD. The series continues and focusses on1962; Elvis was 27 when he recorded all these great tracks. Amazing new tracks are created for your listening pleasure. One of the highlights is 'Just Tell Her Jim Said Hello' which has been created using different keys throughout the whole track, it sounds like a brand-new song! 'Return To Sender' sounds very different and has a new opening. Another gem is the version of 'Because of Love' and although there are no outtakes of this song it does sound different then the master, listen to the first words and judge for yourself. Most songs have been extended using different takes which mean just like previous volumes you get more of the songs without using the same portions.

In Praise of Elvis Presley By Jon Landau 1971

He stands there in a black jump suit with gold spangles and an orange cape. When he stretches out his hands the cape forms a half sun under his outstretched arms and he looks like the true king of rock 'n' roll. He parades in front of 15,000 people and waits for the applause to wash over him and it comes as it always does and as he knows it will. After strutting from one end of the stage to the other after waiting until he feels just right, and until the audience can't wait another second, he turns to a back-up musican who hands him his acoustic guitar. With the rhythm section churning, he stands in front of the mike, holds but does not play the guitar and sings, 'That's alright mama, that's alright for you, just any way you do'.

An Elvis for Everyone

Thirteen days later, Elvis Presley entered RCA's Studio B in Nashville for his first recording session in just over 21 months. After he was inducted into the U.S. Army, there was a concerted effort to limit the amount of fresh product that would be released while Elvis was in Uncle Sam's employ. He recorded a mere five sides in Nashville on June 10, 1958 and of those, only four had been released (the fifth, 'Ain't That Loving You Baby', wouldn't see the light of day until 1964). Needless to say, on March 20, 1960, the anticipation for new music was through the roof.

Elvis' musical style, as a musician and impact as a vocalist and stage performer

Elvis Presley and Roy Hamilton

You may never have heard a Roy Hamilton song - he is not played much on the radio anymore, and is prized mainly by rhythm-and-blues aficionados, especially in England - but you’ve heard the reach of his gospel-tinged voice. Hamilton was 'one of Elvis’s chief vocal inspirations', according to Elvis Presley’s biographer Peter Guralnick, who also noted that Elvis was 'one of Roy Hamilton’s most devoted admirers'. In 1969 Elvis and Roy met at the American Sound Studios in Memphis. Both were being produced by Chips Moman, Elvis at night and Roy during the day. Elvis was thrilled to discover that Roy (his boyhood idol) would be working at the same studio.

Review | Promised Land FTD 2 CD Classic Album

Follow That Dream's 'Promised Land' completes the STAX trilogy and the 2-CD version is a welcome addition to the growing catalogue of collectors releases. The Promised Land album is indeed a classic but by including the alternate album and 'the making of' – it's now widescreen (so to speak) ... The 1974 released classic album includes: yearning ballads, funk, late night laments – and a burning Chuck Berry cover that could melt speaker grills ... To sum up, Elvis took us on a trip to the promised land that's one hell of a ride ... Elvis takes Chuck Berry's classic 1964 musical travelogue Promised Land and amps it in a rocking tour-de-force - and it's fantastic to hear takes 3, 4, powered by Ronnie Tutt's powerhouse drumming and James Burton's driving guitar.

Elvis Presley: The American Sound Studios Sessions 1969

Graceland, the evening of Thursday, January 9, 1969, one day after Elvis' 34th birthday. Elvis met with RCA producer, Felton Jarvis, in the Jungleroom to discuss going to Nashville to record what he hoped would put him back on top of the charts. Marty Lacker was sitting there in the Jungleroom that evening, seething, as he listened to Elvis and Felton finalize the dates for Nashville. He began to unconsciously shake his head back and forth (his head was big, bald and round and as a result his nickname was Moon). Marty fought back his frustration. Elvis snapped at him, 'What the hell's the matter with you?' and Lacker got the opening he needed to lay it on the line one last time: 'Marty Lacker: I just wish for once you'd try Chips Moman and his rhythm section, they're great Elvis'. And Elvis said, 'Well, maybe someday I will'.

June Juanico Remembers Elvis Presley | Interview with June Juanico

June Juanico: Elvis was the love of my life. I met him in the summer of '55, when he was just a regional star. I was 17 and he was 20. He had been in my hometown of Biloxi, Mississippi, several times before, and people said, 'You need to see him', and I went on this one night. I thought he was the most gorgeous thing: big, dreamy eyes. Girls were screaming over him, and I'm just not that kind. I was passing by him, not even looking at him, and he reached through the crowd and grabbed my arm. He said, 'Where are you going?'

How Elvis Helped Save the USS Arizona Memorial

An editorial in a 1960 LA paper, seen by Colonel Parker, mentioned the stalled efforts to complete the USS Arizona Memorial, and Elvis answered the rescue call. A benefit concert was organized to raise $50,000 towards the completion. Having honorably served his country, the memorial to the lost soldiers in the attack on Pearl Harbor was near and dear to Elvis' heart and he pledged to buy the first ticket at a cost of $100. Tickets ranged in price so everyone that wished could afford to attend, with 100 reserved seats priced at $100 each. One hundred percent of the proceeds were slated to go directly to the fund.

The 'parade' footage is good to see as it puts you in the right context with color and b&w footage. The interviews of Elvis' Parents are well worth hearing too. The afternoon show footage is wonderful and electrifying : Here is Elvis in his prime rocking and rolling in front of 11.000 people. Highly recommended.
