The original art for the 1993 Elvis Presley stamp will go on display at the National Postal Museum in Washington, D.C., on July 30 as part of an exhibit titled, "Art Of The Stamp." This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Elvis stamp which, according to one Postal official, "changed everything." After the Elvis stamp was issued, the public clamored for more contemporary designs with brighter and more colorful styles. During a recent press conference announcing the exhibition, which will include 99 pieces of original stamp art, a Postal official recalled that when the Elvis stamp was first issued, the public squirreled away $36 million worth of them--a record that still stands today.

In 1993, the Post Office asked the public to cast their ballot to decide which of the five different likenesses of Elvis they wanted for the commemorative stamp. About 1.2 million people cast their ballots, which were specially created postcards printed by the U.S. Post Office, but 10 million ballots had to be printed because people kept taking them and saving them as souvenirs.

When the ballots were counted, the public overwhelming voted for the stamp that became known as "The Young Elvis," designed by Mark Stulzman. Not only will Stulzman's original art be on display, the work by all the other artists that was created in hopes of winning the country's most celebrated stamp-design contests will be featured.

Framed reproductions of all the stamp art on display, including the Elvis stamp, will be on sale at "Art Of The Stamp," which runs through February of 2004.

The afternoon show footage is wonderful and electrifying : Here is Elvis in his prime rocking and rolling in front of 11.000 people. Highly recommended.
