Jailhouse Rock: The Musical to Open in London Without the Song 'Jailhouse Rock'

It seems that something is missing from the new musical entitled "Jailhouse Rock: The Musical" opening in London's West End later this month. Ostensibly, this is a stage production reworking Elvis' 1957 film of the same name. But the song "Jailhouse Rock" is nowhere to be heard and the songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller find that using the title "Jailhouse Rock," which they created for both the film and the song, is offensive and misleading to the public.

Back in 1957, with a working title "Ghost of a Chance," Leiber & Stoller, in one afternoon, wrote several songs for the film including "Jailhouse Rock," "You're So Square Baby I Don't Care," "Treat Me Nice," and "I Want To Be Free." When MGM heard "Jailhouse Rock," they changed the name of the film and licensed the title from Leiber & Stoller for theatrical release. Not one of the Leiber & Stoller songs from the film is included in this UK theatre production.

This great songwriting team wrote several other Presley hits including "Hound Dog," "Don't," "Love Me" and "Loving You" among many others.

"We feel that using the title of our song for their show is intentionally misleading the public. This use of a title that we created is not only misleading, it is, in effect, preventing us from using our own title for a possible future, legitimate production," said Mike Stoller. He continued, "We are not the owners of the copyright outside of the US. We don't know what the legal options are in the UK, but we will fight any attempt to bring this production to the United States where we do own the copyright."

Other Leiber & Stoller songs that defined the era of Rock & Roll include, "Kansas City," "Stand By Me," "Love Potion #9," "Charlie Brown," "Yakety Yak," "Poison Ivy" and "On Broadway" to name just a few.
