Celebrated American Pop Artist, Peter Mars Brings Elvis To Australia
On Tuesday October 26, Trevor Victor Harvey Gallery (TVH) Sydney, Australia will be hosting an exclusive VIP opening of celebrated American pop artist, Peter Mars' latest exhibition featuring his unique interpretation of popular culture and one of the greatest pop culture icons of all time, Elvis Presley from 6.30pm.
This exhibition, which will be open for the public from October 29 - November 12 will be the first Australian viewing of Mars' works, which have gained a cult following by art aficionados and celebrities alike with Michael Jordon, Sheryl Crow, Priscilla Presley and U.S. President Barack Obama all collectors.
'Over the last 20 years, working on his own, Peter has risen to become one of the US's leading Pop artists. He stands apart in his ability to decipher the joy and nostalgia found in everyday objects, which have become a part of our shared culture. Peter's broad and varied palette, ranges from famous personalities and iconic brands to comic book superheroes and vintage TV shows. His work is fresh and cool, plain and simple', TVH Owner and Director, Trevor Harvey, said.
Through a unique collaboration with Priscilla Presley and Elvis Presley Enterprises, Mars was granted unfettered access to their extensive photography archive. 'Elvis Presley Enterprises has allowed me to use any of their 60,000 archival photographs taken of Elvis throughout his life.
If I had only Elvis to work on for the rest of my career, he would fill my days. His legacy is daunting'. 'This is the 75th anniversary of Elvis' Birth. With apologies to the Beatles, Elvis has been called the 'greatest cultural force of the 20th Century'. He actually had more number one hits in Britain than the Fab Four. The power of Elvis as an enduring cultural icon makes him inherently 'collectable'. Nobody has yet tapped into this passion from a fine art perspective until Peter Mars', Harvey said. Mars' widely varied subject matter cuts a broad swath across popular culture and nostalgia. Celebrity figures, in particular, charge his batteries with unique inspiration and his use of mixing inks and paints, employing silkscreen and hand painting creates the texture and complex layers that have made Mars' works so popular.
'True celebrities are individuals that come to embody American pop culture. They play a role in our culture similar to the heroes of ancient times.
It is easy to imagine Muhammad Ali as a Ulysses, to understand Elvis Presley as an ancient troubadour serenading a Shakespearian heroine, or Johnny Weissmuller and Michael Jordan, quite literally, as heroes of Olympian stature', Mars said.

The 'parade' footage is good to see as it puts you in the right context with color and b&w footage. The interviews of Elvis' Parents are well worth hearing too. The afternoon show footage is wonderful and electrifying : Here is Elvis in his prime rocking and rolling in front of 11.000 people. Highly recommended.
