Elvis Statue Looks Set For Shreveport's Municipal Auditorium
The Downtown Development Authority has voted to provide $40,000 toward a statue of Elvis. Municipal Auditorium, located on what has been renamed Elvis Presley Boulevard, was home to the Louisiana Hayride, which helped launch Elvis' career.
Fans of Elvis would like to have the statue up by October, the 50th anniversary of his first performance here. If they can't get it done by then, they are aiming for Elvis' birthday in January.
The deal with the DDA is going to get All Shook Up, though, unless the local Elvis' Angels fan club raises the remaining $20,000 to pay for the statue.
The statue will cost 60-thousand dollars. The remaining funds will be collected through donations.
The money from the DDA hinges on completion of an upcoming bond sale that will pay for $2.4 million in downtown improvements, including artwork.
