Review : He Touched Me : The Gospel Music of Elvis Presley DVD
This two part documentary, narrated by Sander Vanocur, is definitely a labor of love and the sincerity of all involved shines through time and time again. The documentary delves deeply into exploring the religious side of Elvis' life, which most Elvis fans knew existed, but had only heard little snippets of prior to this documentary.
Long before Elvis was heralded as the king of rock 'n' roll, he was a faithful fan of gospel music. Although it was instrumental in shaping his spiritual life as well as his career, no documentary has truly chronicled this facet of his life ... until now.
He Touched Me: The Gospel Music Of Elvis Presley features more than 30 of Elvis' gospel recordings and never-before-seen footage. This 3-hour collection, filled with personal stories by those who knew him well, goes behind the scene of Elvis' career. Discover how Elvis was dramatically influenced by two of southern gospel music's premiere quartets, The Statesmen and the Blackwood Brothers. Learn the controversy surrounding this performance of 'Peace In The Valley' on the Ed Sullivan Show and hear the surprising story behind the recording of his signature hymn, 'How Great Thou Art'. You'll see Elvis in a new light as you witness how deeply he was touched by gospel music.
This is one of the most moving documentries about Elvis you will see. Gospel music was a big part of ELvis life and this tells the story of how Elvis came to be inlfuenced by it,who his influences were and how he recorded his songs. The footage used is brilliant - Elvis in the 50's, 60's & 70's is well represented and source material is the best available!
You don't have to be religious to be uplifted by the stories about Elvis generosity of spirit or the Music. The music is infectious, uplifting and reverencial. And Elvis in performance is totally mesmorising. Every ELvis fan should have this in thier collection. There is a bit of duplication of material on the second disc but that doesn't detract from its value - in my eyes it adds to it!
I have always loved Elvis' Gospel music. This DVD shows an indepth look into the Spiritual life of Elvis and his love and longing to love the Lord. I found the interviews to be very inspiring and hopeful for Elvis' salvation. One interview with Myrna Smith of the Sweet Inspirations tells of Elvis and praying and laying hands for healing on one of the girls because she had an tumor which she was healed of.
This double DVD with over 3 hours of material is great value - I am an Elvis fan and know that there's a lot of substandard documentries to be wary of. This is not one of them. If you are thinking about buying this - don't hesitate! Trust me - its brilliant!!!!!

This is an excellent release no fan should be without it.
The 'parade' footage is good to see as it puts you in the right context with color and b&w footage. The interviews of Elvis' Parents are well worth hearing too. The afternoon show footage is wonderful and electrifying : Here is Elvis in his prime rocking and rolling in front of 11.000 people. Highly recommended.
